I love this surprise engagement! I love surprise engagements as a rule. It’s such an amazing moment to be able to witness while capturing it. When Logan contacted me to photograph his surprise proposal to Sydney at Butterfly Gap Retreat, I jumped at the opportunity!
From the start, Logan was so nice, and such a planner! He had every detail, every cover-story, every logistic nailed down. Yet every text, email and phone call betrayed the nervousness and excitement he felt.
Surprise Engagement near Knoxville, TN
I checked the weather multiple times. It was going to be perfect if everything held. With a hurricane barreling up the Atlantic coast and sending bands of clouds even into Knoxville, nothing could be certain. I hoped for Logan’s sake that the beautiful sunset he was hoping for would happen.
The day dawned crisp and Fall-like, the hurricane bands were rolling in. I checked the forecast again—the clouds were to break as sunset approached. I sent Logan a quick email and started preparations for the evening.
The trip out to Butterfly Gap from Knoxville was beautiful. I took the scenic route and enjoyed some breathtaking mountain views. The leaves were beginning to turn and it was just lovely.
I arrived at Butterfly Gap Retreat an hour early so I could check out the surroundings. I was quickly greeted by the kind office staff who guided me in the direction of the overlook and provided tips for the drive.
Once I arrived, I quickly got settled in to my spot and tested the lighting and my camera settings.
Before long the time came. Logan and Sydney approached me at the overlook. I quickly started our pre-agreed story that I was a new photographer looking for portfolio. The sunset was so beautiful, could I take a few pictures of them. They agreed and I began snapping. Soon after, Logan dropped to one knee. There were tears and smiles and hugging. The emotions cycled again.
Soon after the tears and hugs ceased, Sydney of course she said yes! The happiness was so evident.
The ring was gorgeous, the moment sweet. Thank you Logan and Sydney for asking me to capture this life-changing moment.
